Associate, Solar PV Performance
Company Overview
Treaty Oak Clean Energy, LLC (Treaty Oak) is a clean energy platform focused on developing, commercializing, building and operating utility-scale solar plus battery storage projects in targeted US energy markets. Our mission is to create a sustainable future by providing clean, low-cost energy solutions to the grid benefiting energy consumers, communities, and generations to come. Treaty Oak is a wholly-owned portfolio company of Macquarie Asset Management (Macquarie), pairing Treaty Oak’s renewables development expertise with Macquarie’s capital backing.
Headquartered in Austin, Texas, Treaty Oak’s portfolio consists of 20 GW+ of in development and in construction utility scale renewable projects across the United States. Treaty Oak features an experienced management team with a track record of developing and commercializing 9 GW+ of utility-scale power projects and a collective 100+ years’ experience across critical competencies, including power markets, offtake structuring, design, engineering and real estate.
The Role
Treaty Oak is seeking an Associate, Solar PV Performance. The role will use PV performance engineering skills to support solar project development, design optimization, and performance modeling. This role will focus on pre-construction phases, including meteorological (Met) data analysis, energy production modeling, and tool automation.
The role will work closely with Engineering, Finance, Markets, Construction (EPC) and Operations and Maintenance (O&M) teams. The position reports to the Senior Director of Technology and Asset Performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct energy yield simulations using PVsyst and other tools (e.g., SolarFarmer, Plant Predict, SAM) to design and validate solar plant configurations, including shading analysis, soiling, mismatch, resource variability impacts, tracking schedule and degradation modeling.
- Generate optimized energy assessments for stakeholders, integrating site conditions, technology selection, and financial targets to refine project designs parameters (e.g., GCR and DC:AC ratio).
- Streamline design optimization (GCR, DC:AC ratio, string sizing) and technology comparisons using pvlib and other open-source tools in Python.
- Develop in-house tools for sub-hourly clipping analysis, spatial irradiance smoothing, DC current and voltage degradation, and probability-of-exceedance calculations.
- Collaborate with Development Engineering to develop process for assessing and optimizing trade-off between grading vs production loss due to terrain following designs.
- Manage meteorological (MET) campaigns to assess site-specific solar resources (GHI, DNI, albedo) and validate long-term yield assumptions.
- Use Data Analytics skills to QA/QC the data being collected via Met campaigns, ensuring that it is not impacted by tree shading or other obstructions and use the data to extract other parameters for energy modelling (e.g., albedo and soiling rate).
- Validate PAN files and 3rd party lab PV module testing results to ensure accurate PV module performance characterization as inputs to bankable energy yield estimates and EPC performance acceptance tests.
- Support feasibility studies and technical due diligence for new projects or M&A opportunities, ensuring designs meet financial and operational targets.
- Support internal research on the latest solar technology trends, and resource and production modeling best practices.
Education and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience in solar data analysis and energy modeling.
- Proficiency in Python (Pandas, NumPy, pvlib) for time-series analysis and automation.
- Familiarity with solar resource datasets (e.g., TMY, Solargis and SolarAnywhere) and industry tools (PVsyst, SolarFarmer, Plant Predict)
- Basic understanding of solar physics (e.g., plane of array irradiance modelling and single-diode model of a solar cell)
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
